It is important that you take your personal safety seriously and minimise any risk to yourself.
- Think ahead and plan your journey, avoiding deserted area.
- Try to avoid walking alone at night, and keep to well-lit main roads. where possible try to avoid short cuts like alleyways, waste ground and wooded, bushy areas. Use public transport or taxis late at night
- Stay alert, be aware of what’s going on around you
- Always try letting someone know where you are going, the route you intend to take and when you are expected to return.
- Try to travel in pairs or groups
- Consider investing in a personal alarm (this can be obtained from most DIY Stores between £3-6) Look confident and do not stare at strangers
- Consider carrying a mobile phone (but keep it out of sight until needed)
- If you have to walk along a road, walk facing the traffic to avoid "kerb crawlers"
- Never accept lifts from strangers or hitch-hike
- Never carry large sum’s of money or important documents, (if you have to carry a large amount of money never show this in public)
- Keep purses, wallets, mobile phones and other expensive items out of sight. If someone tries to grab your bag, don't fight for it.
- Always have enough money for a taxi home (late at night) always keep a reliable taxi phone number on you. (when alone in a taxi always sit behind the driver) Always use pre-booked license taxis
- Try not to use ATM machines late at night.
- When in clubs, never leave your drink unattended and be wary of accepting drinks from strangers—make sure you see your drink opened/poured in front of you.
- Try to avoid wearing headphones, your ability to hear traffic, strangers or potential trouble is severely restricted.
